Mount Pleasant Villa

Completed (2025)

Mount Pleasant Villa, Coonoor. Originally built in the 1940s, Mount Pleasant Villa stands as a timeless colonial bungalow reimagined for contemporary life. What was once an 80-year-old residence has been revitalised into a luminous holiday retreat that celebrates memory, place, and the quiet elegance of renewal. Rooted in an ethos of architecture that listens to its context, the restoration preserves the villa’s colonial façade, mud-plastered walls, and vintage fenestration — the very elements that lend it its enduring charm. Within, the home unfolds anew through subtle interventions: raised ceilings, widened arches, and strengthened rafters that invite natural light and ease the flow of space, without disturbing the structure’s historic integrity. The interiors blur the line between indoors and landscape, creating a gentle dialogue with the misty Nilgiris beyond. Sun-drenched bedrooms and a central sunroom open into green vistas, while broad verandahs and sit-outs dissolve into the surrounding lawns. Every space breathes in rhythm with nature, shaping an atmosphere of calm retreat. Heritage resonates in detail — ventilators patterned like lace, carved timber coves, and glowing fireplaces that warm both air and memory. The material palette is muted yet soulful: earthy tiles, polished timber flooring, and soft heritage tones that gather and reflect light with quiet grace. Craftsmanship forms the project’s true narrative. Reclaimed teak doors, bespoke cabinetry, and carefully restored furniture weave stories of sustainability and continuity. Each surface and joint is designed to age beautifully, allowing the home to evolve with time — living proof that preservation and modern comfort can coexist in delicate harmony.
